Window frosting & privacy film: what it costs

Frosted film types, honest size maths and the one-way mirror myth — for Sydney offices, clinics, gyms and shopfronts.

Frosted film is the quiet workhorse of office privacy: it blurs the view, keeps the daylight and makes plain glass look finished. It is also one of the most-searched signage jobs we get asked to quote from our Moorebank studio — usually by someone who has just Googled "window frosting cost sydney" and found nothing but overseas calculators. Here is what actually drives the price, the way we explain it to clients across Liverpool and the south-west.

What frosted film actually is

  • It is vinyl, not etched glass. Frosted film is a matte vinyl applied to the glass. Real acid-etching costs a fortune and never comes off — film gives you the same look for a fraction of the price, and it is reversible.
  • Four styles cover most jobs. Full frosting (every panel), privacy bands (a strip at eye height), cut shapes or patterns, and the etch-look logo — your brand cut from frost and applied like a decal.
  • The one-way mirror myth. Frost is privacy by blur, not by mirror. It softens shapes behind the glass — it does not make your window see-out-but-not-seen-in like a mirrored or perforated film. If day-night one-way privacy is the goal, say so when you ask for the quote.

What it costs — the honest maths

Job typeHow it is pricedWhat moves the price
One glass door or single panelPer panel, small jobAccess, edges and cut detail — usually lands in the low hundreds
Full shopfront or office floorPer square metreTotal m², number of panels, whether logo shapes are cut in
Etch-look logo / cut shapesPer design, plus filmComplexity of the cut — simple marks cost close to a plain frost panel

The drivers are simple: square metres, panel count and how much cutting the design needs. Height matters too — a ground-floor strip is a quick job, while an internal office window above a stairwell needs more setup. We quote it exact in writing, so the number you see is the number you pay.

Where it earns its keep

  • Consulting rooms and clinics. Ground-floor consultation and treatment rooms are the classic case — daylight in, privacy on, and no blinds to fight.
  • Offices and meeting rooms. A frost band at eye height keeps the room open while stopping the fishbowl feeling. Lots of south-west offices run frost + a cut logo on the door glass.
  • Shopfronts. Frost covers the lower half of the window for stock or change-room privacy while the top half keeps displaying — pair it with the shopfront signage ideas that pull customers in.
  • Gyms, pools and rentals. Anywhere glass faces a neighbour. Landlords like it because a quality film removes clean and the glass goes back to new.

DIY rolls vs professionally cut film

  • DIY film looks cheap twice. Off-the-shelf rolls bubble, lift at the edges and show every overlap on a wide panel. On a shopfront, customers see it from a metre away every day.
  • Pro film is cut to the exact pane. Plotter-cut to the millimetre, edges finished, logo shapes weeded and applied — it reads as part of the glass, not a sticker on it.
  • Removable vs long-term. Standard architectural film lasts for years indoors; removable grades peel away cleanly when a lease ends. Renters and short leases should always ask for the removable option.

FAQs

Does frosted window film block light?

No — that is its biggest selling point. Frosted film diffuses light rather than blocking it, so the room keeps its daylight while the view is blurred. It is the usual answer where blinds would make a space dark and gloomy.

Can frosted film be removed?

Yes. Film peels away from glass cleanly and most residue wipes off with warmth and soapy water — the glass returns to new. That is why it suits rented offices and shops where etched glass or paint would be a lease problem. Removable-grade films make it even easier.

Can you cut our logo into the frosting?

Yes — the etch-look logo is one of the most popular versions. We cut your mark from the same frosted vinyl and apply it to the door or window glass, so the logo reads as though it has been etched into the pane. Send us the artwork as a vector file if you have it; if not, we can redraw it.

How long does window frosting last?

Quality architectural film installed indoors typically lasts for years without peeling or yellowing, and sun-facing shopfront glass lives at the shorter end of that range. The honest answer depends on film grade and exposure — we will tell you which grade suits your window before you commit.

Planning the whole glass front, not just the frost? See our signage and display services, the shopfront signage ideas guide, or the full CRINO service list — frosting quotes usually land the same week you ask.
