Sticker sheets vs die-cut stickers: which to order

Two ways to buy the same sticker, two different bills. How sticker sheets and individually cut stickers differ on cost, durability and use — for Sydney businesses ordering labels and promo.

It's the sticker question we get most at the Moorebank studio: “should I get them on a sheet, or cut to shape?” Both are printed the same way — the difference is how they're cut and finished, and that changes the price, the look and how people use them. Here's the honest breakdown before you order.

What each option actually is

  • A sticker sheet is kiss-cut. Each sticker is cut through the sticker layer but not the backing paper, so they stay on the sheet until peeled. Multiple sizes and designs can share one A4 or A5 sheet.
  • Die-cut singles are cut right through. Each sticker is cut to its own shape — circle, logo outline, custom contour — and delivered loose, ready to hand out or apply.
  • Same print quality both ways. Vinyl, waterproof laminates and colour options are identical; you're choosing a format, not a quality tier.

When a sticker sheet wins

  • You need several sizes. Product labels, jar lids, price stickers, “thanks for your order” cards — one printed sheet, many shapes. Sheets are the cheapest way to buy variety.
  • You're labelling at a bench. Sheets feed neatly and peel one at a time, which beats fumbling loose stickers when you're packing fifty orders.
  • Budget matters. Per sticker, sheets are usually the cheaper route because the cutting is simpler and everything shares a run.

When die-cut singles win

  • The sticker is the takeaway. Events, market stalls, packaging seals, car windows — a shaped sticker people actually keep looks and feels more premium loose.
  • Shape is the brand. A die-cut that follows your logo outline reads as designed; a sticker stuck on a rectangular backing reads as an afterthought.
  • They get applied by hand, everywhere. Bottles, laptops, toolboxes, helmets — singles are made to travel.

How the cost behaves

  • Sheets scale down cheaper. Setup covers the whole sheet, so a mixed sheet of ten designs can cost less than ten separate die-cut runs.
  • Different shapes cost extra on die-cut. Each unique contour is its own cut, so a custom shape run prices higher than the same artwork as circles or squares.
  • Quantity moves both. Whatever the format, the per-sticker price drops fast with volume — we quote it exact in writing, never guesswork.

The 30-second decision

  • Multiple designs or sizes on a budget? Sheet.
  • One shape, handed out or stuck on things? Die-cut singles.
  • Going on cars, drink bottles or anything that gets washed? Either format — but insist on vinyl. Paper stickers fail fast outdoors or wet; vinyl doesn't. We covered the material choice in our vinyl vs paper stickers comparison.

FAQs

What's the difference between kiss-cut and die-cut stickers?

Kiss-cut stickers are cut through the sticker layer only and stay on a backing sheet until peeled; die-cut stickers are cut clean through to their own shape and delivered as individual pieces. The printing is identical — the cutting and format are what differ.

Can I mix several designs on one sticker sheet?

Yes — that's the main reason sheets exist. Different shapes and sizes can share one A4 or A5 sheet, as long as everything fits the layout. It's usually the cheapest way to get variety, especially for small-batch product labels.

Are die-cut stickers waterproof?

If they're printed on vinyl and laminated, yes — they handle rain, condensation and outdoor exposure for a good stretch. Paper-based stickers don't survive water regardless of how they're cut, so specify vinyl for anything going on cars, bottles or packaging that gets chilled.

Which is cheaper: sheets or individual die-cut stickers?

Sheets usually win on per-sticker cost, especially across several designs, because one setup covers everything. A single custom die-cut shape carries its own cutting setup, which shows up at smaller quantities. We quote both formats side by side so you can compare the real numbers.
